Thesis abstract

An investigation into how Singapore visual arts practitioners perceive environmental sustainability in their practice

While environmental sustainability has become a predominant global issue, Singapore’s local visual arts sector has been lacking in discourse and initiatives compared to other sectors. This thesis seeks to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of visual arts practitioners in Singapore when it comes to environmental issues. This study will first consider the negative environmental impact of visual arts practices. Second, the research will analyse the barriers and challenges visual arts practitioners face in dealing with environmental issues in their practices. Lastly, the thesis will address how visual arts practitioners could make a positive impact in the visual arts sector through changing mindsets regarding environmental sustainability.
