Thesis abstract

Impact study of music community outreach programmes in hospitals: a case study of Sing'Theatre

Community theatre companies in Singapore have reached out to multiple communities such as senior citizens, youths and schools through their outreach programmes using theatre and drama as a platform. A local musical theatre company called Sing’Theatre (est. 2006) provides music programmes every day as their outreach to communities including patients from multiple hospitals and healthcare centres in Singapore. Data was obtained from surveys and interviews with the following objectives (a) how these outreach programmes affected practitioners of Sing'Theatre as individuals and their respective careers, and (b) to understand their primary motivation in being involved for this type of outreach. The outcome of this research hopes to support other theatre and arts companies to be more involved in reaching out to the hospital communities.
