Thesis abstract

Exploring cultural cooperation efforts and its impact on artists and cultural workers: a case study on cultural cooperation between Australia and Singapore

Australia and Singapore have shared a unique relationship with bilateral partnerships in trade, military and education. Arts and culture have also been a significant part of the Australia-Singapore partnership agreement, such as the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two governments in 2015, which will end in 2020. As part of this agreement, many programmes have been realised, ranging from festivals to exhibitions, involving Australian and Singaporean artists working and collaborating together. The research aims to investigate how these programmes, as part of cultural cooperation efforts, have impacted the artists and cultural professionals involved. This research will review the experiences of individuals involved in two of these programmes: the joint Australia-Singapore Artist Residency programme involving the National Museum of Singapore and the Australian War Memorial; and the partnership between the Singapore Art Museum and Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, Australia.
